Concerto Copenhagen played its first concerts in 1991 and has since developed into Scandinavia's leading ensemble in early music and one of the most exciting and innovative baroque orchestras in the world. Original interpretations and a strong ability to communicate with the audience are among the features of Concerto Copenhagen - the old music is made vital, relevant and contemporary.
In 1999, the internationally renowned cembalist and chamber musician, Lars Ulrik Mortensen, was associated as the ensemble's artistic director. He received the 2007 Léonie Sonning Music Prize.
SCANDINAVIAN ORIGIN
The meeting between Concerto Copenhagen and Lars Ulrik Mortensen has led to an exciting, artistic and musical journey, appreciated and praised by the audience and critics worldwide. The ensemble has managed to combine a repertoire of well-known European music with lesser-known works of Scandinavian origin.
Over the years, Concerto Copenhagen has collaborated with many of the great internationally renowned artists in the field of early music such as Emma Kirkby, Andreas Scholl, Anne Sofie von Otter, Sonia Prina, Vivica Genaux, Andrew Manze, Andrew Lawrence-King, Reinhard Goebel, Ronald Brautigam, Jordi Savall and Alfredo Bernardini, who was the first guest conductor of the ensemble. From 2015 to mid-2017, the Danish composer Karl Aage Rasmussen was associated as a in-house composer and accompanied the orchestra on an exciting journey into the contemporary music world, which led to highly acclaimed premieres.
INTERNATIONAL MOVEMENT
Concerto Copenhagen's CD recordings for the German CPO, Deutsche Grammophon and BIS, as well as DVD productions for Harmonia Mundi and Decca, have gained great international attention and have been rewarded with prestigious awards. This has led to invitations from many of Europe's leading concert halls and festivals, as well as tours to the United States, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Australia and China. The foreign reviews reflect the experience of an international orchestra at the top level.
Concerto Copenhagen's collaboration with the Italian opera director Deda Cristina Colonna has led to several highly successful opera productions in Copenhagen.
In 2016, Concerto Copenhagen celebrated its 25th anniversary with a number of exciting projects and events.
CO-OPERATORS AND SUPPLIERS
Concerto Copenhagen's media partner DR P2 Music records and transmits many of the concerts in Denmark and via the EBU in most of the world, whereby each of the ensemble's live concerts are heard by an average of 15 million listeners worldwide.
In Denmark, the most important partner is The Royal Theater, where the ensemble participates in an opera production about once per season. The most recent productions include operas by Purcell, Monteverdi and Mozart, as well as performances by some of Handel's most beloved operas, including counter-actor Andreas Scholl as lead role in both Julius Caesar and Partenope.
